With the prevelence of microservices and internet penetration, being able to navigate from one resource representation seemlessly to another is paramount. The current standards (or rather expired drafts) do not sufficiently accomplish this goal. Instead Draft-wparad-json-links introduces the necessary amendments to JSON to allow for exactly this end via new a content type application/links+json, a JSON format which places links as a first class JSON property name giving consumers everywhere explicit ability to find the available resources anywhere.
